Originally living down state, BJ Shawn fell in love with being ‘Up North’ and outdoors. She was a self- proclaimed pansy who realized all the outdoors had to offer. In May of 1998 she fulfilled her first dream of opening a retail shop and her new dream of getting families outdoors. Her daughter, Becky Philipp-Kranig, (who always enjoyed the outdoors) became a partner with BJ in October of 1998. Together they grew the store into the community presence that it is today.
In the beginning it was important to find brands that produced good quality products, and stood behind them. As the world has learned more about global warming, Bearcub Outfitters is trying to bring in more brands that have an environmental story, whether it is with recycled products, responsible production, or making contributions to environmental or world causes.
Bearcub Outfitters is also passionate about its commitment to our community. We especially enjoy working with the Petoskey School District, Camp Daggett, Little Traverse Conservancy, Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council and The Little Traverse Bay Humane Society (we can’t forget about our furry family members)! Check out our Community Contributions page for more information.
As a passionate supporter of the arts and the environment, BJ Shawn started a fund through The Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation that provides grants in support of these efforts. Upon BJ’s passing in 2019, her daughter Becky will continue BJ’s desire to enhance these areas in Emmet County.
BJ and Becky know that Bearcub Outfitters would not be where it is today if it wasn’t for all the people that have supported them, especially their staff. The Bearcub family looks forward to meeting your family!
