Where do we even begin? The stories we have heard from the Ice Storm of 2025 are sobering and abundant. From extensive power outages (which still continue for some), to the loss of beloved trees that stood tall in every family photo, the damage to our northern Michigan community is unparalleled. Our local parks and trails will take months to recover, and several area businesses (like the maple syrup industry) were destroyed.
Yet, among the heartache are stories of profound strength and extreme generosity. Area restaurants nourished thousands of line workers who arrived from across the country to help restore our power. Community organizations opened their doors to provide safety and shelter to those in need. Hotels and businesses are working together to provide housing to those who are still living in darkness. The ways in which our community has come together in support of each other is extraordinary, and it is inspiring.
Each day may bring a new challenge, but it will also bring opportunities; opportunity to help a neighbor, create a new path, or plant a tree. The days are getting lighter, the breeze is blowing warmer, and we will move forward with hope for a stronger tomorrow.
